Hong Kong may be the world’s most visited city this year, however, a potential, though surprising, future contender is rising up out of the sidelines.

Chongqing, a major Yangtze River port in southwest China, has turned into the world’s quickest-developing tourism city, recording an astounding 14% development in its tourism area last year.

That is as per the World Travel and Tourism Council, which reviewed 65 cities on the commitment that travel and tourism makes to their economies.

Most of Chongqing’s growth is apparently down to its popularity with Chinese visitors, but that’s not to say it doesn’t have much to offer international travelers, too, CNN states.

It makes sense when you understand what Chongqing has going for it: it’s the portal to the Three Gorges, tremendous waterway valleys that have held their charm regardless of being halfway submerged by the development of a massive dam.
