Iran‘s former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday registered for next month’s presidential election, Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported.

It was a surprising move since Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had advised the ex-president in September not to run for presidency.

Ahmadinejad had previously served for two terms as president from 2005 to 2013. A total of 126 candidates, including six women, have registered their names to run in the May 19 polls.

Registration for the May polls will remain open until April 15 and the final list of candidates will be announced on April 26.
